Students will work their way through the case study material provided. As they do so, they will use their knowledge of the following to analyse case study data, produce formulations, plan interventions, interpret outcome data and describe methods of implementation, monitoring and evaluation:. During the first term of the course students will develop ideas for their research project and will be given the opportunity to choose a research project proposed and supervised by members of the course team or other Tizard staff see Appendix 4 of course handbook for the list of topics for the current year.
Students who choose to design their own project will be allocated a dissertation supervisor. Students following the MSc in Analysis and Intervention in Intellectual and Developmental Disability are required to do an empirical dissertation. All other students can choose between either an empirical or a non-empirical e. Students develop a proposal assessed for their research project with advice from their supervisor and apply for ethical approval either to the Tizard Ethics Committee Ethical Review Checklist available on web-based resources or to another ethics committee such as those in the NHS.
In addition, the Research Methods module involves short assignments and a worked problem. Our postgraduate courses improve employability prospects for both those with established careers and new entrants to the field. Many of our students already work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in professional, management or supporting capacities.
Our programmes support their continuing professional development and enhance their opportunities for career advancement. Other students, who are at the beginning of their careers, move on to a range of professional roles in health and social care including working as psychologists in learning disability or behavioural specialists in community learning disability teams; service management of development roles; clinical psychology training or a PhD.
Career destinations include working as a clinical specialist, special needs advisor, autism teacher and ABA tutor for various health and special needs organisations such as the Step by Step School, Special Help 4 Special Needs and WA Health.
All teaching takes place at the Tizard Centre. Postgraduate research students have a shared office space with a computer and telephone.
The Tizard Centre runs an annual seminar series where staff or guest lecturers present the results of research or highlight recent developments in the field of social care. The Jim Mansell Memorial Lecture invites public figures or distinguished academics to discuss topics that could interest a wider audience. The Centre also publishes the Tizard Learning Disability Review in conjunction with Emerald Publishing to provide a source of up-to-date information for professionals and carers.
The Tizard Centre provides consultancy to organisations in the statutory and independent sectors, both nationally and internationally, in diversified areas such as service assessment, person-centred approaches, active support and adult protection. The Centre also teaches a range of short courses, often in conjunction with other organisations. Staff publish regularly and widely in journals, conference proceedings and books. The programme is designed to broaden your understanding of global issues and current affairs as well as to develop personal skills which will enhance your employability.

The online autism education program is designed for current educators and related service professionals who need the skills and expertise to develop and implement programming for students with ASD. Students will advance their understanding of the characteristics of ASD and how it affects development, formal and informal assessment methods, instructional strategies, and effective teaching practices for both students who require intensive and highly individualized education and those who need less intensive supports and services. The online master's in autism spectrum disorder is intense and thorough, providing a broad foundation in behavioral analysis and then building on that foundation in one of three track directions.
All students will complete core coursework that gives them a full understanding of autism spectrum disorder as well as the most effective methods for educating children and youth with ASD. The online master's program includes an intensive field-based practicum as well as a culminating project that demonstrates mastery of program competencies. Upon graduating, students will have fully developed their ability to select, implement, and evaluate evidence-based interventions and support strategies for learners with ASD, and they will be expected to demonstrate best methods for applying behavior interventions and teaching social interaction and communications skills.
Behavior: Learn to conduct functional behavior assessments and design behavior intervention plans to support socially adaptive behavior for students with disabilities. The focus of this track is on understanding behavior function, factors that influence appropriate and inappropriate behavior, and function-based interventions. You will study methods for prevention and intervention in various settings, including examining ethical and legal issues related to these prevention and intervention methods. Leadership: This track provides an understanding of the issues and trends related to administering special education programming for students with disabilities.
You will learn about the history of special education and policy, current policy and practices and criticisms of both , and develop a deep understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA. Graduates of the online master's in autism spectrum disorder program are prepared to seek many different careers serving students with ASD—for example, they may serve as special educators, autism specialists, or behavior specialists at the local or state level. Outside of education, they may choose to utilize their knowledge by working with Applied Behavior Analysis clinics or pursue work as a therapist in specialty areas, which may include occupational therapists, speech language pathologists or therapists, or art therapists.
It does not lead to initial nor advanced licensure in special education in the state of Kansas. Note: In order to enroll in this program, a bachelor's degree is required. No program can guarantee licensure. An introductory graduate-level course on autism spectrum disorder ASD.
It addresses characteristics of children and youth with ASD, trends and issues associated with autism spectrum disorder, and effective practices and strategies for structuring, managing, and promoting social skill development and social interactions among learners with ASD. An analysis of information derived from assessment instruments and procedures appropriate to measuring the social and cognitive development of exceptional children and youth.
Provides experiences in determining assessment data required in the development of Individualized Educational Programs IEPs. Attention is also given to the design of informal assessment procedures, specific to the needs of exceptional children and youth. Experience is provided in the preparation and presentation of assessment data for use in instructional planning conferences.
This is a methods course, with special emphasis on learners with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder. Particular attention is given effective practices and strategies for teaching, managing and promoting social skill and social communication development and proactive social interactions. Emphasis is given to milestones in normal language acquisition and variations from norms demonstrated by handicapped learners.
